Writer’s Block? February 4, 2013

Do you have writer’s block? I have a couple of tricks up my sleeve to help you with your writer’s block. We all get it, there’s nothing wrong with you. I have been there, as well as every other writer in the world. We all wait until we want to freak out, and then we frantically search the web to find an answer to our misery. Well, I can’t guarantee that I can cure your writer’s block, but I can give you some great ideas to try and cure it yourself!

  1. Keep a small notepad with you at all times. How many times have I been out and about and thought of something amaizing to write about, and got home and in front of my computer and completely forgot. It seems I can always remember every detail and thought surrounding my great idea, that I had a great idea, and a few small details involved with it, but never what the idea actually consisted of. How frustrating! There have been so many times that I might have just pulled over and jotted down a few notes. I have actually been out at the bar and thought of something fantastic, and went into the bathroom and typed a few sentences into my notepad on my cellphone. Having the ability to take notes on a moments notice is imperative for a writer.
  2. Brainstorming. I know it sounds silly and completely cliche, but it seriously helps. Make a list of all the things you love, all the things you hate, all the things that annoy you or frustrate you, your favorite food, your favorite movies, your favorite artists, your favorite brands, anything at all in the world. If that doesn’t work, make a list of random, weird words that you can think of. Any crazy word that comes into mind, write it. If these lists don’t get you anywhere, write about your writers block and how you are trying to overcome it. Write what you tried and how you did with each thing. Post your lists, make fun of yourself, and encourage others to give you ideas.
  3. Encouragement walk. Go for a walk or drive, (with your handy little notepad) and see what you see. Write anything and everything that you see. If you go into a store, write about that experience. If you go to a park, write about that. Go places that mean something to you and write about why. If nothing, write about your walk or drive and what you found, or didn’t find, along the way.
  4. Search the web. Get on Google and type in one letter at a time until you find something interesting in any way at all. Once you do, read about it. Search it and research the subject, or click on links to different subjects.
  5. Know how to do something? Have a skill? Have a hobby? Write about it! Tutorials are all the rage now! Everybody wants to learn something…I just learned about crocheting. I was recently laid off for the winter months, and with all this time I thought I might find a hobby. I already knew how to knit so I kept doing that. Then, I got curious about crocheting, that took me so long to learn because I couldn’t find a good tutorial for so long. It’s very hard to learn, but once I found a good one, I was a pro! Make a tutorial about something your good at whether it’s fixing cars or cleaning oven glass.
  6. Take up a new hobby. If you have already written about everything you do, then find something else to do. Write about your journey through the learning process, and once you figure it out, write about whether you enjoy it or not. Challenge yourself. Find something that seems difficult and challenge yourself to do it. Look for a DIY craft or hobby and try to duplicate it. Follow these things through, and then write about how it went, how easy or difficult it was to learn and execute, whether you enjoyed it or not, and if you will do it again or continue it. If so, make your own teaching post that tackles everything you had trouble understanding when you were learning. There was one specific thing when I was learning to crochet that I just didn’t understand, when I finally figured it out, I wished I had been able to find it online instead of spending weeks trying to figure it out. If I were going to make a tutorial, I would include the things I was unable to find, the things I had trouble understanding, and the things I thought were very helpful!

I hope this helps! Good luck all!!

Feel free to let me know if any of these tips worked for you! If they did, I will have to check out the post they inspired! Good luck and have fun!

Painting… January 29, 2013

I really want to keep painting, but I have nowhere to do it. Like I said, I’m  waiting for the addition to set up my new art room, but how many years away is that? Right now all of my stuff is in storage so I don’t even have the ability to take my sketchbook and sketch a quick picture. My mom was telling me this morning that she thinks I should hijack the spare bedroom, for our non-existent guests,  and throw a tarp down and get to it. What do you all think? I really want to, but I need a more permanent place and if we have company I don’t want to have to pack up all of my shit again…What to do…HELP!! If I get 30 yes votes, I will do it and start painting again. GO!
